The coverage route

Will insurance help pay?

A prescription and a plan’s agreement to pay are different steps. Ask about both before comparing your share of the bill.

Ask the plan about the exact use

As of September 2026, Medicare’s drug benefit can cover some uses other than weight loss, but the plan’s medicine list and approval rules still apply.

  • A plan's formulary is the list that names the medicines it covers.
  • With prior authorization, your plan has to approve payment before your medicine can be supplied by the pharmacy.
  • Ask the plan to check the product and the reason for the prescription.
  • Ask who sends any required paperwork and how you get the answer.

Medicare’s temporary weight-loss route

As of September 2026, CMS, the agency that runs Medicare, describes the GLP-1 Bridge as a temporary program for eligible people.

Its monthly medicine copay, the part the patient pays, is $50 under the September 2026 terms.

CMS says the program runs from July 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027. It is separate from the usual Medicare drug benefit.

  • Whether you qualify depends on age, weight and certain health conditions. A prescription and program approval are required.
  • Under the September 2026 rules, a person who has type 2 diabetes goes through the usual drug benefit instead of this program.
  • As of September 2026, the Bridge lists semaglutide (Wegovy) as injections or tablets.
  • For tirzepatide (Zepbound), the Bridge lists only the KwikPen, an injection pen that holds more than one dose, as of September 2026.
  • The list also includes orforglipron (Foundayo) tablets, pills taken by mouth, as of September 2026.
  • Zepbound’s small bottles, called vials, and pens that hold only one dose are outside the Bridge list as of September 2026.

Take the question to the current program

The medicine name alone does not tell you whether you qualify. Ask the prescriber to check the program’s full rules.

Ask the prescriber to go through the CMS eligibility page with you. It gives the full rules about age, weight, health conditions and Medicare plan type as of September 2026.
