Video, messages or a room?

Start with how you want to ask questions. Then ask how that format handles a question it cannot settle.

A live video conversation

You speak and hear the answer while you are both present.

  • Write down the main concern before the call.
  • Find out what happens if the connection drops.
  • Ask whether a written recap follows the visit.

Messages and forms

You write your history. The clinician reads it later. The reply may lead to more questions.

The Federation of State Medical Boards advises state boards. Its September 2026 guidance says a treatment decision cannot rest only on answers to a fixed tick-box form.

That guidance calls for the clinician to be able to ask further questions and collect enough health details to decide on care.

That advice is not law. As of September 2026, state rules decide which online visits and prescriptions are allowed.

  • Ask whether you can reply to the clinician.
  • Ask how long replies usually take.
  • Ask how to move to a live discussion.

A conversation in a room

An in-person visit adds travel and time in the clinic. Ask how much can be discussed in the appointment.

  • Bring a note of your questions so none slip your mind.
  • Ask how later messages are handled.
  • Find out how records reach your other clinicians.
