What is tirzepatide?

Tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) acts on gut hormones, body signals involved in appetite and blood sugar, as described in the Zepbound label.

The use decides which brand is discussed

As of September 2026, Mounjaro’s approved uses include type 2 diabetes. It also has approval to lower heart attack and stroke risk in adults with type 2 diabetes at high risk of those events. It has no weight-loss approval.

As of September 2026, Zepbound has approval for weight treatment in adults. This approval also includes treatment of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity.

With obstructive sleep apnea, a blocked air passage causes breathing to stop again and again while you sleep. Obesity means excess body weight; ask the clinician whether these terms describe your health.

  • Ask which use the clinician is evaluating.
  • Ask for the medicine name and whether it comes in a pen or a small bottle.
  • Ask who helps with any plan approval.

A trial average, not a personal forecast

In SURMOUNT-1, adults without diabetes lost averages of 15.0% to 20.9% across tirzepatide groups, versus 3.1% on a dummy treatment, over 72 weeks.

Lilly paid for the trial. People had regular visits and advice about eating and physical activity. The groups taking tirzepatide received different medicine strengths.

Bring the practical concerns

The September 2026 Zepbound label reports stomach problems and warns that tirzepatide can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills.

  • Discuss your medicines and pregnancy plans with the clinician.
  • Ask for a plan for symptoms and later questions.
  • Ask how the choice of medicine and injection pen or bottle affects the bill.
